The project started off using Gumstix hardware. In November 2008, gumstix announced they
were discontinuing the PXA255 chipset and it's expansion boards which included the NetDuo.
It looked like months of research and development was about to be wasted.
While searching for a good, inexpensive replacement, a friend suggested taking a look at the Yoggie firewall. I ordered an open firewall, and received a Gatekeeper Pro
instead. After a few hours of hacking on it, I found a way to get root. There, inside the /etc directory was the 'gumstix-release' file. It seemed that the yoggie was a great replacement for the
gumstix netduo. It has more storage, faster CPU, faster RAM, and a build in USB power cable. They already had what I was trying to make using gumstix, so naturally yoggie became the choice for hardware.
Yoggie's customized software on the other hand is not privacy friendly. Don't worry, yoggie's "phone home" features have been removed. More on that later...
